Sylvia Lunsford was a supporter of academic excellence, a value she passionately instilled in her daughters, Anne Roberts and Alycia Lunsford Washington. With her unwavering dedication, both daughters achieved the status of 1st generation college graduates. Their accomplishments were also recognized through an academic excellence award, which helped them secure a high school seniors scholarship from Newport News Public Schools.

Throughout her life, Sylvia was recognized not only for her unwavering commitment to her family and friends. She was a woman of her word, always keeping her commitments and never faltering in her love and devotion to those she cared for.

This academic excellence award is designated for high school seniors with a strong academic history throughout their years at Newport News Public Schools.

Students from Newport News Public Schools who graduated from Warwick High School with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and have family members who attended Huntington High School are encouraged to apply for the academic excellence award and high school seniors scholarship.

The application opens up January of each year. For this upcoming school year 

(2026-2027) up to 3 students will have an opportunity to receive this award.
